This week's prompt over on Nina Ribena's Art Journal Prompts and More is Inspired by Portraits. The artists to choose from include Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo. As I have previously created a page inspired by Frida Kahlo (see HERE) and I am not the most confident portrait drawer, I went with Pablo Picasso, using an image from Nina's YouTube video as my starting point.
I started by lightly sketching out a copy of the original image in pencil on a piece of mixed media card (18.5cm x 19.5cm).
I then went over the outline using the black Neocolor II water soluble wax crayon.
To add colour, I used a mixture of Neocolor II water soluble wax crayons blended out with a water brush and my Van Gogh water colours from Royal Talens.
Sometimes I added the Neocolor II colours directly onto the page and sometimes I picked up the colour from the end of the crayon using my water brush and used my glass mat as a palette.
White highlights were added in the hair using a white Posca pen and the white Neocolor II crayon blended with a water brush. I also defined the eyes and eyebrows a little more using a black Posca pen.
As I was intending to add the page to my journal, I stamped out a suitable quote from the Say It How It Is stamp set onto a piece of white card using Onyx Black Versafine ink and heat embossed it with clear EP. Once each part of the quote had been fussy cut, I added it down the right hand side to balance out the page.
Once again, I enjoyed the challenge and felt that I was taken out of my comfort zone. I am learning to relish it!
