I have been enjoying the October 'Inspired by' prompts over on Nina Ribena's Art Journal Prompts and More. Week 3 was 'Inspired by Flowers' and the choices of artist were Monet, Heidi Reil, Yvonne Coomber and Georgia O'Keefe. I chose to create my page in the style of Yvonne Coomber.
I started by blending a Distress Oxide background onto a piece of mixed media card (18.5cm x 19.5cm). I used Squeezed Lemonade, Tumbled Glass and Spun Sugar.
I mixed Phthalo Green and Titanium White Golden High Flow acrylic paints with some of the High Flow medium. This was spattered all over the bottom of the page and some stalks were added in the same colour with a fine brush. I then made a darker green by adding a tiny amount of Carbon Black, some Ultramarine Blue and Hansa Yellow Medium to the remains of the previous green. I repeated the spatter process, but unfortunately forgot to take a photo. Next, I mixed some Quinacridone Magenta and Titanium White Golden High Flow with the High Flow medium and used a fan brush to add flowers to the stalks, as well as further spatter. The larger flowers were added using my finger tips in Amsterdam acrylics (Manganese Blue Phthalo, Naphthol Red Deep and Azo Yellow Deep). I added some drops of Titanium White Amsterdam acrylic ink to some of the centres and around the outside of others.
I then added some drops of Daler Rowney pearlescent liquid acrylics and dabbed them with my fingers. This is a nod to the glitter that Yvonne Coomber uses on her canvases.
Finally, as I was intending this to be an art journal page, I added three sentiments from the Small Talk Occasions sticker book by Tim Holtz idea-ology and went round them with a blue fine liner.
