A Distress Experiment With Crazy Birds: Art Journal Page
I finally got round to making my first art journal page on the theme of Friendship; the March prompt over on Nina Ribena's Art Journal Prompts and More. I went back to one of my favourite stamp sets; Bird Crazy designed by Tim Holtz for Stamper's Anonymous. I also decided to see how the Distress Oxides would work with Distress sparays and inks to create the background.
I started by creating the background on a piece of mixed media card (18.5cm x 19.5cm). I layered up different colours of Distress sprays in shades of purple, drying each layer thoroughly in between.

Next, I blended Seedless Preserves Distress Oxide all over the dry page, spritzed lightly with water and dried thoroughly once more.
To create further interest, I added some Brushed Pewter, using a feather brush to blend out the heavy spots of pigment.
I had stamped three of the Bird Crazy stamps onto offcuts of mixed media card three times, using Jet Black Archival ink. I also stamped the witches hat from the crazy Things stamp set three times. Before using the matching dies to cut out the images (including separate wings, eyes and beaks for the birds), I coloured each piece using the Royal Talens Ecoline pens and a couple of the Kuretake Clean Colour pens. Once the images had been coloured and diecut, I went round the edges with a black Pitt Artist pen and layered everything up.
I went round the edge of the background with some Wilted Violet Distress Oxide, then blended some Dusty Concord Distress ink along the bottom of the page, using a piece of copy paper cut to shape as a mask.
This gave the birds something to stand on once they were added.
To finish, the phrase 'Birds of a Feather...' was added using the Word Chain Alphabet by Claritystamp. The letters were stamped in Versamark ink and heat embossed with bright white detail embossing powder by Cosmic Shimmer.
