Learning to Fly

I had great fun trying out a range of different techniques and media on this tag, from Distress Oxides, Aqua Tints and Gilding Wax, to die cutting, embossing and sanding back. This is being in the Craft Stamper blog challenge 'Anything Goes' and also the Tag Tuesday fortnightly challenge 'Things with Wings'.

I had a #8 manilla tag that I had been experimenting on with the new Distress Oxides in Faded Jeans, Broken China and Cracked Pistachio.  These inks blend beautifully.  I added the butterfly stamp from the Perspectives set designed by Tim Holtz for Stamper's Anonymous in Walnut Stain Distress Oxide and added Wilted Violet Distress Oxide through the mini specimens stencil by TCW, to add the three butterflies in the top right corner. I gave the tag a light spritz of water to activate the distress oxides, and dried it with a heat gun.

The next step was to emboss the whole tag using the A4 Butterfly Dreams embossing folder from Creative Expressions.  I used a fine sanding pad to remove the top surface where there were no stamped or stencilled images.  I then lightly brushed over the bottom corners with Wilted Violet distress oxide and added Gilding Wax in Decadent Bamboo over the sanded butterflies at the top, and Copper Gilding Wax over the butterfly image at the bottom of the tag.
I die cut and embossed butterflies from Sheena's stamping card, using the Sizzix Alterations Bigz die and matching embossing folder designed by Tim Holtz (Layered Butterfly).  The larger butterfly of the two was then painted with purple Aqua Tint (#56) and once dry, lightly rubbed over with Copper Gilding Wax. This was added at the top of the tag using glue on the right and foam pads on the left for added interest and trimmed off along the right hand edge of the tag.  Finally the 'Learning to fly' sentiment was taken from the Clippings Stickers set by Tim Holtz and added across the tag.
