Art Journal Prompts 17: Magazine Clippings

This was a most liberating art journal page to complete and I now have a great stash of images clipped from magazines and newspaper supplements for future use too. This was created following the prompt 'Magazine Clippings' for the Art Journal Prompts Facebook group.  I was originally intending to use images, but instead found lots of headlines and references that could be applied to my feelings about art journaling; from a film advert, to a holiday brochure.

As usual I started by giving the page in my 8" x 8" kraft card journal a coat of white gesso. I then thinned down some of my Adirondack paints in Wild Plum and Raspberry and blended them over the page using first my fingers, then a damp baby wipe.

The next step was to add layers of stamping to create the impression of texture.  For this I stamped in Magenta Hue and Cactus Flower Archival ink; firstly using the Square Peg Round Hole stamp by IndigoBlu held in my hand, followed by the Bubbles Background stamp (also by IndigoBlu) and the Chicken Wire stamp, designed by Sam Poole for Creative Expressions.  I used the Magenta ink towards the top of the page and the Cactus Flower at the bottom and right hand side.

I then added my selection of titles and headers which had been clipped from several newspaper magazine supplements and a travel brochure.  Together, they explain my love of art journaling and the feelings it creates.  I used Distress Collage Medium for this step and also sealed over the clippings, so that I would be able to add my Big Brush Markers later.  By the time I returned from the football match, everything was dry!

To help the clippings become part of the page, I went round each one using my Faber-Castell Big Brush Markers and blended out the colours with my fingers.  I started with Pink Madder Lake and Crimson; then moved on to Caput Mortuum to add more of a shadow.
The final touch was to add areas of Texture Paste and Sparkle Medium in Chic Magenta by Phill Martin and Cosmic Shimmer through the Doodle Cross stencil by That Special Touch.  Once they were dry, I added some more of the Caput Mortuum marker around the clippings to intensify the shading. The 'plusses' represent the positive feelings that art journaling gives to me.
