I do not have a cat of my own, but I grew up with a cat and two of my siblings have cats, so when the prompt for week 26 of the Art Journal Prompts page was pets, it was an easy choice to make. It's not that I have anything against dogs, but I am definitely more of a cat person. This page is dedicated to Mizzy (RIP), Mr Boots, Mittens, Socks and Suzy Shoes.
I decided to keep the page simple and make the cat the focal point. I love this stamp by Sheena Douglass from her Little Bit Sketchy range. Both the cat image and the sentiment come from the Meow stamp set. I started by cutting a piece of Sheena's stamping card 18.5cm x 19.5cm ready to glue into my kraft card journal. The cat on a pole image was stamped using Jet Black archival ink and masked off using Pebeo drawing gum.
Next I blended Faded Jeans and Broken China Distress Oxides all over the page, gave the page a light spritzing with water and dried everything thoroughly with my heat gun. I wanted to give the impression of the cat looking down on everyone from a great height.
To emphasize the concept, I mixed some of the Iridescent Gold Studio Acrylic paint by Pebeo with water and used the Tim Holtz Spatter Brush to add 'stars' to the sky; after all, outside cats tend to be nocturnal creatures.
Having removed the drawing gum, I then used three Spectrum Aqua pens and a water brush to colour the image. Our family have only ever had black and white cats, so that made the colour choice easy; Black for the cat and Sepia and Chocolate for the pole.
Initially I was going to stamp another sentiment from the set, 'Dogs have owners; cats have staff.' but I decided instead to go with 'Can I help ?' which was stamped with Versamark ink and heat embossed with Wow Gold Pearl super fine embossing powder. A black fine liner pen was then used to add a shadow for emphasis.
