When I saw the prompt for Challenge 39 on Junk Journal Junkies and Mindful Art: Chicken, Turquoise, Green, Red, I immediately knew which stamps I would be using; the Cockrel and Hen stamps and masks from Claritystamp.
As I usually work in an 8" x 8" spiral bound art journal, I cut my Mixed Media card to 18.5cm x 19.5cm as usual. The cockrel, hen and cock-a-doodle-doo sentiment from the stamp and mask set by Claritystamp were stamped in Onyx Black Versafine ink, then heat embossed with clear embossing powder.
I masked off the cockrel and the hen using the accompanying masks, then used the largest moon from the moon mask set (also by Claritystamp) to mask off their heads. A hill mask was created using copy paper and the ground was brushed into place using Pampas Artistry ink. The Claritystamp cloud mask was used with Ocean Reef Artistry ink and a stencil brush to create the sky: starting at the top left hand side and gradually moving down the page. Once the masks had been removed, I used a water brush to 'paint' over the top section of hillside and smooth out the join between ground and sky. The birds were then coloured with a selection of Ecoline water colour brush pens by Royal Talens, blending with a water colour brush as I went along. I used Carmine, Scarlet and a touch of Reddish Brown on the hen and Scarlet, Deep Green, Forest Green and Turquoise Blue on the cockrel. I felt that the ground needed a finishing touch, so used one of the Wee Grasses (Claritystamp) in Fern Green and Library Green Archival inks to add some detail along the bottom of the page. I chose the sentiment 'replace fear of the unknown with curiosity' from the Small Talk sticker book by Tim Holtz to finish off the page, because chicken is also a term used to indicate someone who is scared.
