This is only my second page following the 'art journal prompts' Facebook group, so I still have 8 weeks to catch up! This week the prompt was 'magic' and this is what it inspired me to make. To me reading is magic. Books can transport you to any place at any time, whether real or imaginary!
Once again I worked in my 8" x 8" kraft card scrapbook from The Works, but this time I covered the whole page with gesso before I began, rather than leaving a border. Once I had dried the gesso with my heat gun, I dabbed on Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade and Rusty Hinge Distress paint; starting with the lighter colour in the centre and getting darker as I moved towards the edges. I blended the paint out with my fingers, then used a wet baby wipe to dab over the whole page to create a little texture.
To create further depth and interest, I used the typewriter text stamp from the School Desk set and the birch stamp from the Birch and Pine set (both designed by Tim Holtz for Stamper's Anonymous) and stamped them, first using Venetian Orange Archival ink, then Tree Branch Archival ink.
On a separate piece of Sheena's stamping card, I had stamped the pile of books from the Little Bit Magical Knowledge stamp set designed by Sheena Douglass, using Jet Black Archival ink. I cut out the image and glued it to the page using Distress Collage Medium to seal the image as well as to attach it to the page. Once the glue was dry, I used my Faber-Castell Big Brush markers, both to colour the image and to embed it on the page by going around the whole image with Terracotta and the bottom and right hand side with Caput Mortem pens, blending them out with my fingers. Until they completely dry, Big Brush Markers can be removed with a wet baby wipe if they are used over a non-porous surface.
Finally, I add three items stamped directly onto the page using Ground Espresso Archival ink. The quote comes from the Bookworm stamp set by Darkroom Door and the fairy from the Wee Folk 3 (Fairies) stamp set by Claritystamp. The word 'magic' is actually 'magical' from Word Chain set 7 by Claritystamp. I used a small Post-it note to mask off the final -al while I was inking it up, then removed it before stamping. I could have used my Word Chain Alphabet stamp set to build up the word instead, but this was a little quicker.
