WOYWW 866/86: New Year, New Challenge

Welcome to the weekly sharing of desks which is WOYWW (What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday?), the brainchild of Julia, who kindly entrusted it to me to continue after the first 15 years of togetherness.  Please feel free to link up your desk and visit others' - we are a friendly bunch.  Welcome to the first edition for 2026.

My desk shows my Christmas present from my younger sister, the only problem I have now is finding an online tutorial for left handers.  Mum tried showing me on Friday but as she is right handed I struggled to follow other than creating a chain.  I am excited to try all the patterns so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Happy New Year.
History.
Landscape.
Opposites.
Favourite animals.
The scariest thing.
As you can see, I am keeping up with my #dailyatc2026 challenge.  I decided to carry on using the daily prompts over on 365 days of drawing prompts and other art but using Clarity stamps and stickers.  So far, so good.
Eva was supposed to be coming over yesterday for a craft session in the shed but she is snowed in at present (my former school has had the first two days of the new year as snow days too).
Eon Solar have been out to see what's what as my solar batter has been idle since Saturday and has four red lights.  Was talked through a reset on the phone on Monday but still no change.  I do still have power to the house although not much from the solar panels as they are still largely covered in snow.  They have now put things onto a winter setting and the battery is being charged from the grid while the panels are not providing enough charge.
While I am getting to grips with crochet I have finally started a project that I bought the wool for over three years ago.  I will probably only manage 3-4 rows a day so this is a long term project but at least I have made a start.
Hope you are all safe and warm.  I am getting into a routine of visiting desks on a Friday when I go over to Mum's.  Wishing Neet well and hoping she is back home soon as I am not sure whether she is still in hospital or not.
Stay safe and Happy WOYWW.

  1. Happy New Year Sarah! That’s a fab prezzies from your sister, I think Lynne might be the one to help as she’s a left handed crochet whizz. Sorry Eva was held up by snow, we’ve had a lot here too, unusual for us, and more forecast for Friday!

  4. Oh that I lived nearer. I taught 4 ladies I met on the internet to crochet some time ago (2014). One was a retired primary headteacher who'd never got the hang of it before, I think one was a leftie. They came to my house every couple of weeks and one ended up making so many things it was amazing. I created a blog for them check it out https://bjcraftcorner.blogspot.com/2026/01/woyww-866-brrr-its-freezing.html.
The crochet website I used has changed so try this now https://attic24.co.uk/ she did great instruction videos/photos. If you delve into the pages you'll find something to help. There is always the mirror method with your Mum or I'd be happy to do a zoom call it you like, let me know, I'd love to help. There are 50 patterns there and you could do one a week with 2 weeks to spare - oh what am I like. Totally distracted by your desk and first paragraph sorry lovely ATCs and super knitting. Hugs BJ#2

  5. Happy New Year! a daily ATC sounds quite challenging! Crochet is also quite forgiving to pick up and put down- only one needle to loose! Robyn 4

  6. Just so you know I have updated/changed the links on my first post (2nd Oct 2014 - Crochet Club the beginning) so Basic Stitches and conversion tables are now sorted and the Attic24 pattern too, The snowflake pattern mainly uses chain stitch so a great one to get you started. Oh my you've got me started now... Hugs BJ#2

  7. I'm sure you will manage the crochet with a little leftie tuition. I can do the stitches - I just can't follow a pattern🤣. Your daily challenges are lovely. Happy New Year.x x Jo 🌈

  8. Hi Sarah, I'm early today but you will have to guess why. Good luck with the crochet. There are some videos for left handed called Bella Coco Crochet. Love the new journal pages too. I'll be back later to catch up with everyone. Happy woyww, Angela x7x

  9. Firstly Neet is still in hospital...I messaged her yesterday. She says there's nothing she needs and I told her everyone sends their love.
We charge our batteries from the grid during the night through the winter[cheaper].
Try sitting face to face to your mum for her to teach you left handed or just learn right handed...anything is possible :-)
    Hugs,

  10. Ooh good pressie, as a fellow left hander I can understanding all my granny squares turn out triangles! As a kid I used to sit opposite my teacher when learning guitar etc as that helped switch the hands around (well for me). Hope you get your power sorted soon too.

  11. Hi Sarah and happy new year! I like this little book, Crochet Unravelled, with left handed instructions: https://amzn.eu/d/grgerpe
If you prefer videos, Bella Coco on YouTube is excellent.
Your ATCs look great, too. Sorry Eva couldn’t make it over, I’ve seen online how badly Stoke’s been hit by the snow, I bet Ash Bank is terrible.
    Happy WOYWW

  12. Wow. I am in awe of you and Lynne, making crochet clothing. Other than one or two small jumpers or cardigans when DS was small I don't know I have ever made an actual wearable article of clothing. Loads of knits, and feel pretty confident there, but crochet? Yikes. Loving the ATCs - will we do a swap for the anniversary this year? I wonder...
    Happy WOYWW!

Happy new year Sarah. I do hope you manage to crack the crotchet thing. As a left hander myself I gave that one up after a year of trying with a left handed teacher, you tube videos, books, mirror imaging and whatever else is out there. I’m sure you’ll have more success than me though. Good luck.

  14. Happy new year Sarah. I hope you have more luck than me with the crotchet. After trying every method going as a left handed I had to admit defeat after a year of trying. I’m sure you’ll have more luck than me though

  15. Happy New Year!!! Whenever I tried to learn crochet or knitting as a leftie, I gave up. But then again, I can't tie shoe laces like everyone else, I couldn't translate the right handed instructions to my leftie ways. However other lefties I'm sure can knit, crochet and tie shoelaces properly lol. It's just me. Love the ATCs especially combining them with the drawing prompts :D Puppies & Kittens made me go aww - love that one :) x

  17. I taught someone to crochet using the mirror method, you simply sit opposite a right handed crochet person. I hope the links help. Happy New Year hugs Angela #13

  18. I want snow!!
Good that you have a work around with the solar panels.
The temp was almost 70* F here on Christmas day. We ate Christmas dinner on the deck with our new cat and 4 possums.
I wish I lived closer. I used to teach Crochet at Michaels Arts & Crafts. I had to teach myself left-handed to open up for more students.
Creative Blessings & Happy New Year Hugs!

  19. Happy New Year! I hope you soon master crocheting! I've made many a granny sqaure blanket in my lifetime! Your daily prompts are interesting with the stamps! Great challenge (I like the polar bears the best today!) That is a beautiful sweater project! We have had a lot of snow so far, and lately freezing rain. I'm staying put! Although I did have to brave the snow on Monday to play Pickleball. I always wondered what people with solar panels did when there was no sun, now I know! Keep warm! ❤️🙂Lindart #16
