Junk It Up: An Art Journal Page

The second week of each monthly prompt over on Nina Ribena's Art Journal Prompts and More is 'Junk It Up'.  As the main January prompt is words,  I decided to use magazine clippings that appealed to me over the top of some paper towel mop up sheets to create my page.
As usual I worked on a piece of mixed media card (18.5cm x 19.5cm).  I went through my stash and found some paper towel mop up sheets which had been used to clean up stencils and ink off my glass mat.  I took the top layer of each piece.
Usually I use an entire piece of paper towel in one piece as a background, but I decided to tear the mainly red and mainly orange pieces into sections and glued them to my card.  Once sealed with matte medium and dried, I trimmed round all the edges.
Next, I added part of the paper towel with the rose stencil pattern on it (Claritystamp New Design Stencil Club #45).  The pattern didn't show up very well against the bright background, so I blended Sunflower DecoCreme paint through the stencil directly over the top.
Next I added further texture and interest by stamping the script stamp from the Journaling set (Claritystamp) over the page using Venetian Orange Archival ink.
Followed by the harlequin stamp from the same set in Vermillion Archival ink.  I held the stamps in my hand to get a grungy look.
Having gone through my stash of magazine clippings, I picked out three phrases that fit how I feel about the new year and the fact that I am very much an early bird rather than a night owl.  These were added to the page.
To finish, I went round the edges of each of the clippings using Faber Castell Big Brush markers in shades of red and blended the colour out with my fingers.
I have another stack of magazines to go through before they get recycled, so I'm sure that I will find lots of additional pictures and word clippings to add to my stash.
